The Yamaha TRX850 drew clear inspiration from Ducati and was initially intended for the Japanese market. The TRX combined the 10-valve parallel-twin engine from the TDM850 sports-tourer with a trellis frame. To enhance the V-twin sound and feel, Yamaha modified the TDM motor with a 270-degree crankshaft.
Due to significant interest from beyond Japan, the TRX850 underwent revisions for the European market and was reintroduced in Spain in late 1995. European versions featured firmer suspension, different brakes (Sumitomo replacing Brembo), and an improved seat with extra padding. Weighing 190kg (418lb) and boasting 80bhp, the TRX claimed a top speed of 140mph.
